How to hard reset the Sprint Mogul

with 30 comments

I get a lot of different smartphones thrown on my desk to be repaired. Today our CEO came in with his Sprint Mogul (which is pretty slick of the HTC series. A lot more refined than my HTC 8525). Anyways it is performing an endless reboot. Since I can’t get into the OS of it, there isn’t much I can do. So I figured I’ll do a hard reset.

So I fire up google and look for information on hard reseting the Sprint HTC Mogul. Well I’ll be damned if there isn’t really any clear information. I did end up finding it but I had to load the pdf from the sprint site. So here it is in texty blog goodness.

Hard Reset
You can also perform a hard reset (also known as a full reset). A hard reset should be performed only if a normal reset does not solve a system problem. After a hard reset, the device is restored to its default settings — the way it was when you first purchased it and turned it on. Any programs you installed, data you entered, and settings you customized on the device will be lost. Only Windows Mobile software and other pre-installed programs will remain.

To perform a hard reset:
1. Press and hold both softkeys on the device. Keep these keys pressed, and at the same time, use the stylus to lightly press and hold the RESET button on the bottom of your device.
NOTE: I had no idea which of the many keys were considered the soft keys. They are the two buttons above the phone control buttons.

2. Release the stylus but keep the softkeys pressed when you see the following message on your device screen:
“Do you want to erase all user data and restore to manufacture default?”
3. Slide open the hardware keyboard, and press R to restore to factory default or press X to exit the hard reset process.

Note:
Your device will be set back to factory default settings. Please ensure any additional installed programs and user data have been backed up before a hard reset is performed.

There you go. Hard reset on the Sprint Mogul.

  1. I didn’t know which two buttons were considered the soft keys either. Thanks.

btw… http://www.dotpocket.com/ is the cause of my hard reset. Attempted to change resolution, heh.

  3. Also, when you hard reset, there is a point where the phone has been reset but then yo get a 3 second countdown until it installs a whole bunch of Sprint crapware. If you want to avoid its installation, just soft reset when you get to the 3 second countdown.

  8. Dear “eod”
I just wanted to thank you for the valuable info on the Mogul hard reset that you listed.
In fact, Sprint repair tech’s don’t know how to do this– I know because my Mogul was totally frozen and I’ve been getting the “run around” that Sprint is famous for.
My phone has been to a few of their “repair” locations this past week and I was told to pick it up today because there was nothing they could do —- yeah right.
So instead of waiting another solid week for a refurbished one to come in as my replacement, I decided to give one last attempt to cure the problem ( a hard reset without having to be in the menu )— Googled it– found your post— tried it—– It FREAKIN WORKED !!!!!!!!
My phone is functional again thanks to you!
    Thank you so very much.
    Daniel :)

  17. I have experienced the RED GREEN BLUE WHITE screen. It means that your operating system has crashed and a hard reset is not available. The only option is to get a new phone. Sprint replaced mine when this happened to me. I was attempting to install the new Windows 6.1.

  19. Go to start, settings, system. Put code of 1234 and it does the same thing.

  20. The Red Green Blue and White screen is the Re Rom screen not the Hard Reset screen. You’re pushing the wrong soft keys.

  21. Ohhh, thank you thank you thank you….

    You’re awesome!!!

(Mine somehow went to 97% memory usage while just sitting in my purse for 4 hours, refused to power off properly, and I popped the battery after minute 3 of it spinning its little colorwheel…. and then I couldn’t get past the Windows Mobile screen.)

Oh, it’ll take some time to get all the stuff synched back up and get the settings back to how I like ‘em….. but… it’s resolved without having to dick around at a sprint store, buy a ‘loaner’ phone to get me through… etc etc….

  25. So thankful to find this straight-forward and easy way to reset. It worked! I was trying all these other methods that I googled that had me pressing the record button and then the power button but my Mogul wasn’t responding. Thanks for taking the time to post your reset method!!!

  30. Okay, I’m having the same problem, BUT my HTC Mogul has been “flashed” for Boost Mobile. It was a Sprint phone, but now works with Boost. If I perform a hard boot, will it still work with Boost or will it now need a Sprint account? Please help, I love my phone!!!
